چکیده مقاله

The progress of the West, the gradual weakening of Islamic societies, and the colonial and cultural movement of the West into these societies, brought about many changes. The clergy reacted seriously to the arrival of the manifestations of Western civilization in the forms of nationalism, secularism, liberalism, and so forth, which were conducted through colonial governments and internal Western-oriented intellectuals. Therefore, the main question of this research is to investigate what was the response of the Shiite scholars to the manifestations of Western civilization? The research hypothesis is based on the comparative approach that shows the clergy's perspective on this phenomenon fluctuated in a wide range of complete rejection of the manifestations of Western civilization to its unconditional acceptance. Sheikh Fazlollah Nuri and Ayatollah Naini were among the constitutional leaders who were skeptical about accepting the manifestations of Western civilization. The result suggests that the differences in Nuri and Naini views are somewhat evident in some issues, such as nationalism, and in some of the positions they acted similarly.
